Cognitive Assessments

Our experienced psychologists conduct cognitive assessments to support individuals to identify their abilities and potential.

Understand your cognitive abilities

Cognitive assessments, also known as intelligence testing, is used to determine an individual’s general thinking, functioning, and reasoning abilities. They identify a person’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses and outline strategies to assist with areas of need to live a more fulfilling life.

Cognitive assessments also assist in developing learning strategies and recommendations for future management. A cognitive assessment can be highly useful and informative for caregivers or educational support persons in terms of highlighting the accommodations the individual may need in their education, home or workplace in order to maximise their learning potential.

What the assessment covers

  • Verbal comprehension: Understanding and using language
  • Visual/spatial skills: Solving puzzles and interpreting designs
  • Reasoning: Ability to detect relationships and patterns
  • Working memory: Ability to retain and use visual and auditory information
  • Processing speed: Making accurate decisions quickly

Gold standard intelligence testing

The Wechsler tests are the most common individually administered intelligence tests, especially for children and are considered the gold standard. These tests require a qualified psychologist to conduct the assessment.

What to expect from a cognitive assessment

Our cognitive assessment process begins with an initial intake interview, which can be completed either in person or via teletherapy. This is followed by a 2-hour, in-person assessment involving both practical and computer-based tasks. For young children, this may be split into two shorter sessions if needed.

Once the assessment is complete, we compile and analyse the results to create a comprehensive report. This includes an overview of intellectual functioning, highlights of strengths and challenges, and insights into how these may affect daily life.

The report also provides tailored recommendations and strategies for the individual, as well as guidance for parents, caregivers, schools, or workplaces. If needed, we may suggest further assessments or referrals to other specialists.

Our assessments are generally conducted in our clinics, however a school visit can be arranged if required for an additional travel fee.
