AAC

Augmentative and Alternative Communication

We provide effective Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems and solutions for people with communication disabilities.

What is AAC?

Communication is more than just the spoken word – particularly for children and adults with communication disabilities. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is a way of communicating that enhances or replaces speech. AAC systems can help people with communication disabilities to develop language skills and have a voice of their own. This can help them participate in daily activities and achieve more independence.

People who can benefit from the use of AAC include those who:

  • Have difficulties understanding language
  • Have little or no verbal speech
  • Have voice difficulties
  • Have difficulty being understood due to motor or neurological difficulties

Support for people with communication disabilities

At Therapy Focus some of our therapists are highly knowledgeable and experienced in AAC support and prescription. These therapists provide advice and support to people with communication disabilities, as well as families, carers, education staff and support workers.

Through our Communication Matters Consultancy, we offer access to a range of communication devices and systems for people with communication disabilities to hire and trial, including high-tech systems such as iPads and eye-gaze devices, and low-tech systems such as communication books. Our therapists can discuss options and make recommendations based on the needs of each individual.
