Connectors
Helping neurodiverse children and adults collaborate and connect through social and emotional learning.
Connect and learn together
Our Connectors groups are designed to help neurodiverse children and adults achieve their therapy goals through collaboration and social connection.
There are two options available ‘Teamcraft’ which uses Minecraft as a platform for fostering collaboration and connection, and ‘Island Inclusion‘ which uses Animal Crossing. These platforms provide a safe, fun, and structured environment, where group participants can connect, communicate, and collaborate around their shared interests.
Why Connectors?
The Connectors groups support participants to build confidence, learn how to navigate social dynamics and strengthen their sense of belonging.
Sometimes people with disability find it difficult or challenging to participate in traditional social environments. Our Connectors groups address these challenges by creating a safe and structured space where participants engage in meaningful social interactions, grounded in shared activities that they find enjoyable and motivating. Platforms like Minecraft and Animal Crossing provide common ground where participants work together, share experiences and develop friendships in a more comfortable setting.
Participants attend weekly, therapist-led sessions in small groups for personalised support. Sessions run 1.5–3 hours, accessible from home or at our offices.
Social and Emotional Learning
Our Connectors groups are built on the principles of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), which emphasises emotional regulation, empathy, and communication. Education is also provided on the Double Empathy Problem, which supports the understanding of how communication preferences can vary depending on someone’s neurotype.
By working together in a gaming context, participants learn to better understand different perspectives, communicate their thoughts effectively, and develop emotional resilience. These skills can be transferred to real-life situations, supporting participants to navigate social relationships more successfully.
Problem-Solving and Strategic Thinking
Participants are encouraged to enhance their problem-solving abilities and strategic thinking through engaging, collaborative activities:
- Teamcraft: Participants may be tasked with building structures or navigating complex worlds that require planning, resource management, and teamwork.
- Island Inclusion: Participants might work together to manage an island’s development, fostering a sense of shared responsibility and strategic decision-making. These activities support group members to use and develop skills such as planning, organisation, and flexible thinking.
Building skills that thrive beyond the group
Participants not only build skills during the sessions but also carry these abilities into other areas of their lives, such as school, work, and family interactions and foster long-term social and emotional connections in the community.
Group sessions focus on the development of:
- Social skills
- Creativity
- Planning
- Problem-solving
- Team work
- Communication
- Patience
- Flexible thinking
