What is Specialist Disability Accommodation?

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is housing that has been specifically designed to meet the needs of people who have an extreme functional impairment or very high support needs.

The NDIS provides SDA funding for participants who meet specific eligibility criteria. The funding aims to provide these participants with more choice as to where they live, whilst also ensuring those homes support their accessibility needs.

SDA Funding Assessments

At Therapy Focus we have a number of occupational therapists who complete assessments for NDIS participants who want to access SDA funding. These therapists are highly knowledgeable and experienced in complex home modifications and can provide a detailed report that addresses the eligibility criteria for SDA funding.

This report, called the Occupational Therapy Housing Assessment Report, includes the following:

• Screening of existing documentation and assessment reports
• Full functional assessment that evaluates a participant’s goals and how SDA funding can support these goals
• Clinical interpretation of findings with reference to the SDA eligibility criteria
• Delivery of the report to the support coordinator in order for a Housing Plan to be developed

During the assessment process our occupational therapists work closely with support coordinators to ensure that the participant’s Housing Plan is complete and ready for submission to the NDIS.

SDA Certification

Are you looking to certify a property as SDA compliant?

A home, dwelling or property must be certified under an SDA design category in order for it to be deemed suitable. The SDA design category is confirmed by assessment against the relevant Livable Housing Design Guidelines and additional SDA compliant criteria at both the design and build stages.

A number of our occupational therapists are qualified as Livable Housing Assessors and can assess and certify housing intended for SDA use. Our extensive experience in occupational therapy, complex home modifications and Livable Housing Assessments guarantees the best outcome for all everyone involved, particularly prospective tenants.
