Are you a legally appointed guardian to a family member with an intellectual disability?

Published 16th July, 2018

Hello, my name is Drianca Naidoo and I am a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) student at
Curtin University in Western Australia. As part of my final year of studies, I am conducting a
research project that explores the decision-making experiences of family members who are
legally appointed guardians of individuals with intellectual disability on issues relating to
prescription of neuroleptic or anti-psychotic medication and challenging behaviour.

I am looking to speak with people who:

  • Are adults (over the age of 18)
  • Are legally appointed guardians to a family member (who is over the age of 18) with an
    intellectual disability
  • Have past or current experience with decision-making on anti-psychotic or neuroleptic
    medication for their family member

If you decide to take part, your participation will involve a one-on-one audio-recorded interview
which will last for approximately 45 to 60 minutes. You will have the right to withdraw at any time
and your participation will be completely voluntary. The findings from this research will be used in
my dissertation and may be presented at research conferences and published in a peer-reviewed
publications.

If you are interested in participating in an interview to share your experiences with decision
making experiences as a legal guardian, or if you know anyone who may be interested in taking
part, I would love to hear from you!

You can send me an email at drianca.naidoo@student.curtin.edu.au or private message the research project Facebook page (search for ‘Family Member Experiences’).
