Our qualified psychologists are able to conduct formal cognitive assessments to identify difficulties in key learning areas which may have an impact on an individual’s daily living.
A cognitive assessment is the formal testing of an individual’s thinking, problem-solving and reasoning abilities. These assessments are conducted by our qualified psychologists and are accepted by the Disability Services Commission‘s Eligibility Team and the Education Department.
How are cognitive assessments conducted?
When assessing children, the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) or Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI) is used. The Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Assessment is also conducted to assess functional impact on daily living, social, language and coping skills.
The process involves a parent interview, completion of the Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Assessment with the parents (and where the child is attending school, the child’s teacher is requested to also complete the assessment), followed by the completion of the WISC (or WPPSI) with the child.
At the conclusion of the cognitive assessment, a detailed diagnostic report will be provided to the family, outlining the scores on each assessment, interpretation of the results and recommendations.
What are cognitive assessments used for?
Cognitive assessments may be used to help assess whether a child has an Intellectual Disability, and is eligible for funded disability support, or extra support from school. It can also be used to determine the child’s strengths and areas requiring support, in their thinking, problem solving and reasoning abilities. It also helps to provide insight into supports to help the child utilise their strengths or develop any areas needing support.
