Recycle Michael wins new garden beds for Scarborough Primary School
Year six and seven students at Scarborough Primary School have won their school two new garden beds installed by Great Gardens TV personality, Chris Ferreira, after their scarecrow was voted most popular by visitors at Garden Week earlier this year.
In term one of the school year, Therapy Focus invited Perth primary school students to create a ‘scarecrow friend’ for Therapy Focus mascot Sunny the Sunflower. 28 very creative scarecrows were submitted and displayed at Garden Week in early April, with visitors voting for their favourite scarecrow.
“We were delighted to see Perth primary schools so enthusiastic about participating in our inaugural scarecrow competition. The activity aims to provide a fun classroom activity, which children of all abilities can take part in. Two of the entries were scarecrows in wheelchairs, which definitely demonstrated our message of inclusion and acceptance”, said Tonia Westmore, Executive Manager of Community & Relationship Development at Therapy Focus.
Scarborough Primary School’s entry in the Make a Scarecrow Friend for Sunny Competition was a clear favourite with Garden Week visitors. Dubbed ‘Recycle Michael’ by the students, the scarecrow was created with recycled materials and featured a live worm farm.
As winners of the Scarecrow competition, the school received a visit from Chris Ferreira and the Great Gardens team, who gave a gardening presentation to the year 6/7 class before installing their prize of two new garden beds.
“Gardening can be very beneficial to children’s development in many different areas. It’s a physical and social activity, and teaches children about environmental conservation and sustainability”, said Chris.
The garden bed installation at Scarborough Beach Primary School will feature on the next episode of Great Gardens TV, which can be viewed online at www.greatgardens.info.
